Vegan Sloppy Joe's

Pin It I know... vegan.  If you aren't vegan you probably have an idea in your skull that all vegan foods are flavorless, plant-y, and well... gross.  I happen to live with one of these people.  While I made these DELICIOUS vegan sloppy joe's alongside the regular beef variety, I got the approving head nod when the vegan grub was taste-tested right after the "real thing".

You can make vegan or vegetarian joe's with the boca "meat crumbles", but I have a hard time trusting that stuff any more than meat, to be honest with you.  If you're going to go to the trouble of making vegan food, do it right!
I made these faux joe's with crumbled tempeh and kidney beans.  The more recognizable the ingredients, the better.

Recipe for Vegan Sloppy Joe's
1/2 red onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
8 oz tempeh (I used West Soy's 5 grain)
2 cups kidney beans, cooked
8 oz diced tomatoes
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 cup favorite bbq sauce

Sautee garlic and onion in large skillet until softened and browned.  Add tempeh, tomatoes, chili powder, and bbq sauce and simmer for 8-10 minutes.  With back of spatula, smash beans until desired consistency is reached.  Simmer for another 10 minutes before scooping onto toasted, whole wheat hamburger buns.

Do you dare feed your family and yourself VEGAN FOOD?!

  1. Can't wait to try the vegan sloppy joes! I don't cook very well, but these look easy. I've just discovered your website (thanks, Brian). Look forward to logging on often!

  2. Hi, Laurie! These are REALLY good. You're gonna love 'em! Keep Brian in line over there :)
